Kids Craft: Handmade Bell Tota

Today’s craft is inspired by the Indian bell totas. These typical house decorations are normally made out of colorful cloth and beads and they are hanging near the house’s door.

The origins of bell totas are not known but they are believed to keep the bad spirits out of the house thanks to the ringing of their little bells.

For our craft, we decided to make a bell tota with paper birds and beads. We used the following material:

  • Colorful craft paper
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Thin ribbon
  • Beads of different color and dimension
  • Pencil
  • Bells
  • Felt flowers or pompons

First of all we decided how many birds make and we set for 5. For each bird we cut out 3 circles (one small, one medium and one big) of different color. We made the beak and the tail simply cutting a little triangle for the beak and a heart for the tail; we glued them on the biggest circle and then fold it in half.

After that we glued on top of the first circle the middle size one, followed then by the smallest.

To complete the bird, we painted the eyes and voila’ our birds!

All what is left to do is to make a hole in the middle of the birds to pass through the ribbon and assemble the bell tota, starting from cutting the ribbon of the desired length, attaching the bell at one end and then the felt flower, the beads, a bird and so on until the end.

Here it is your beautiful paper birds tota that you can make with the children and that will nicely decorate their bedroom or your living room. J
