Multicultural Kid Blogs: What inspired you to create these books?
Rev. Vicki Michela Garlock, Ph.D.: In today’s world, even small communities comprise people of various ethnicities who speak different languages, identify with different cultures, and align with different religious traditions. A vibrant society relies on everyone feeling understood and included but, in the case of religion, we have a long way to go!
One problem is the lack of resources where kids of all ages (and their adults) can learn about several world religions in a single volume. My books aim to change that. Creating a more peaceful, compassionate, and harmonious society means we need to begin with our children, and I hope my resources are a small part of that.
Multicultural Kid Blogs: What projects are you working on?
Rev. Vicki Michela Garlock, Ph.D.: In the summer of 2024 (June 21-23), my colleague, Tim Hall, and I will be offering a weekend experience, Exploring the Religions of Raleigh, for K-12 classroom educators interested in teaching about the world’s religions. We’ll be visiting several different sacred spaces — exploring both commonalities and differences within and across faith traditions — and discussing how teachers can remain within the bounds of the U.S. Constitution (which outlines the separation of church and state) while also avoiding cultural appropriation.

ABCs of the World’s Religions – NEW RELEASE!
G is for Guru. H is for Hijab. M is for Menorah. P is for Prayer. In ABCs of the World’s Religions, kids travel around the world and across the centuries exploring the beauty of the world’s major faith traditions. Learn along with kids as you explore sacred spaces, holy days, and rituals in several different religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

Left-hand pages offer rhyming couplets that explain the basic concepts. Right-hand pages offer additional information, including similarities and differences across religious traditions. Using a non-devotional, age-appropriate approach, ABCs of the World’s Religions is great for anyone interested in developing religious literacy and cultural competency in kids aged 3-10. Perfect for parents and grandparents, as well as educators in public schools, private schools, or faith communities.

This book has already received a 5-star review from Readers’ Favorites:
“Rev. Vicki Michela Garlock, Ph.D., has found the perfect medium to teach young readers about the various religions of the world and their respective traditions and rituals. ABCs of the World’s Religions is an educational book that is also fun to read. Garlock’s rhyming verses are superbly complemented by the vibrant illustrations and artwork by Raman Bhardwaj.”
We All Have Sacred Spaces
Ever wonder about the inside of an Islamic mosque or a Sikh gurdwara? Ever wonder what the first worship spaces were like? Do you know which religions usually require removing shoes or wearing head coverings? Travel around the world and explore the ins and outs of sacred spaces of the world’s major faith traditions – all in one volume. The similarities and differences might surprise you!

Awarded a Gold seal by the Nonfiction Authors Association and a Bronze “IPPY” in the Multicultural Non-Fiction for Juvenile/YA category, We All Have Sacred Spaces explores both the exteriors and interiors of faith-based gathering places in 7 different traditions (Indigenous, Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Sikhism) using photos from around the world.
Embracing Peace: Stories from the World’s Faith Traditions
A boy who is wiser than a king. A boar who saves the earth from the depths of the sea. A fire-keeper who stands between two brothers. A camel who waits on the signing of a treaty. What do all these stories have in common? They’re all about peace! They’re also from the vast, ancient literature of the world’s religions. Travel through the ages and around the world as you learn about eight different faith traditions and the inspiring stories that are part of their lore.

Embracing Peace, which also received a 5-Star rating from Readers’ Favorites, contains 16 peace-related stories from 8 different faith traditions. Each time-honored tale is accompanied by a full-color illustration. In addition, the unique formatting offers both informational text boxes and thought-provoking questions throughout to keep everyone engaged.

Embracing Peace was highly recommended by Midwest Book Review for “family, elementary school, middle school, Sunday School, and community library Religion/Spiritual collections for children ages 5-12.”
