Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2022 Book Review: Mystery of the Troubled Toucan

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2022

Multicultural Children’s Book Day is the successful annual celebration of multicultural children’s books. This year the party takes place online and offline on January 28, 2022.

Book cover Mystery of the Troubled Toucan

Mia Wenjen of Pragmatic Mom and Valerie Budayr of Jump Into a Book/Audrey Press founded this fantastic event to highlight books portraying underrepresented characters and communities.

This year Pack-n-Go Girls sent me Mystery of the Troubled Toucan to review. Lisa Travis wrote it, and Adam Turner illustrated it.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2022: Book Review

Sofia Diaz, a girl from Miami, travels to Brazil with her dad, Mr. Diaz, after learning her parents are separating.

In Manaus, she meets Júlia, the daughter of Senhor Santos, a co-worker who takes them on a trip into the Amazon rainforest. A crazy toucan follows Sofia and Júlia and leads them into an endangered species mystery. Will the new friends solve it?

Mystery of the Troubled Toucan is a great story for middle-grade children to learn about the Amazon rainforest, the diverse wildlife that inhabits it, its climate, and some of its challenges.

Did you know that the Anavilhanas Archipelago is the world’s largest freshwater archipelago during the dry season?

The back matter of this book includes previews of other Pack-n-Go Girls books, facts about Brazil, and a glossary of English words translated to Portuguese and their pronunciation.

In addition to fun facts about the Amazon rainforest, readers can help solve the mystery along with Sofia and Júlia as they find clues and develop a strong friendship.

Travis’ writing is straightforward and includes phrases in Portuguese and Spanish, making the read even more enjoyable.

Adam Turner’s black and white illustrations bring to life the action in the story.

Recommendation

I highly recommend Mystery of the Troubled Toucan for children in middle grade who enjoy stories with mystery, friendship, multilingual characters, adventure, and set in fascinating places in the world. It is also an excellent resource for educators, parents, and librarians to facilitate learning while having fun.

More Pack-n-Go Girl Books

Other exciting titles in the Pack-n-Go Girls collection include Mystery of the Ballerina Ghost, Mystery of the Thief in the Night, Mystery of the Golden Temple, and Mystery of the Min Min Lights.
